چکیده

In recent years, several studies have reported infections associated with Escherichia coli O157:H7, especially in developed countries (1). Except Japan, isolation of E. coli O157:H7 has also been reported in Asian countries (2). Limited work has been carried out on E. coli O157:H7 in Thailand (3,4). Suthienkul et al. reported no E. coli O157 in retail meat and cattle (3), but it was recently isolated from retail beef and bovine faeces (4). So far, no study on clinical features of this highlydangerous pathogen has been carried out in Thailand. We, therefore, conducted a surveillance of E. coli O157:H7 in the clinical specimens and food samples in southern Thailand during 1999-2001.

Effective medicinal plants against enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7.

The stimulating effect of subinhibitory concentrations of antibiotics on the production of verocytotoxin (VT) by enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 has been claimed. The purpose of this study was to find an alternative, but bioactive medicine for the treatment of this organism. Fifty-eight preparations of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of 38 medicinal plant species commonly used...

Antibodies among healthy population of developing countries against enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7.

In Thailand, no reports are available on Escherichia coli serotype O157:H7, a causative agent of severe bloody diarrhoea, sometimes associated with haemolytic-uraemic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. The reason for the non-identification of infection due to E. coli O157 in this country and in other developing countries has not been rigorously discussed. The aim of this study wa...

Effects of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa Extract on Killing Activity of Human Neutrophils and Membrane Integrity of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7.

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 is one of the most virulent causative agents of foodborne disease. Use of antibiotics for the treatment against E. coli O157:H7 infection leads to hemolytic uremic syndrome. The present study evaluated the potential of ethanolic leaf extract of a medicinal plant, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa in enhancing the killing activity of human neutrophils ag...

Escherichia coli O157:H7 colonization in small domestic ruminants.

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 was first implicated in human disease in the early 1980s, with ruminants cited as the primary reservoirs. Preliminary studies indicated cattle to be the sole source of E. coli O157:H7 outbreaks in humans; however, further epidemiological studies soon demonstrated that E. coli O157:H7 was widespread in other food sources and that a number of transmissi...
